The Cult of the Pastor-god

When the church is at its healthiest, many people contribute to the life of the body with gifts they’ve been given.  One of those gifts is “pastoring”, or care-taking.  Mixed with all the other gifts in the body, the whole community is healthy, alive, free, and an expression of God’s love in the world that is obvious and undeniable.

But this is very rare among church gatherings.

Much more often, the group is dominated and defined by the personality of one person: the Pastor-god.

The Pastor-god is not merely a contributor within the body; he is the voice, the face, and the authority in the church.  He is the boss, the CEO, the example, the teacher, the father-figure.

In the Cult of the Pastor-god, they are called “God’s anointed”.  They are the one who communicates God’s word to the followers.  They are the mouth, while the church is the ears.  Their part is to provide care and discipline to the people; the people’s part is to listen, honor, and follow.

And in many churches, this model works flawlessly.  People really want someone to lead and protect them—without it they feel vulnerable and lost.  And of course there are no shortage of people willing to assume this role of the Pastor-god.

The Pastor-god claims to not want adulation and adoration from the people, but inwardly they crave it.  The people claim they don’t believe their pastor is a god, but they treat him like he is.  When the pastor makes them proud, they heap accolades.  When the pastor does not live up to his god-like standard, they look for ways to take him down.

When the Pastor-god is there, the people feel safe.  When the Pastor-god goes away, the people are devastated.

Of course this is nothing new—people are afraid to be leaderless, as was the nation of Israel when they demanded a leader:
But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” (I Samuel 8:19-20)
God reluctantly gave them their leader, an outstanding young man named Saul.  Their craving for a leader was satisfied, but it was wrong; what resulted was anxiety, strife, war, madness, and death.

One of the reasons churches suck today is because they are much less like the body of Christ and much more like the Cult of the Pastor-god—or "the cult of personality."  More and more within the church are recognizing this disturbing reality:
“...evangelicalism is not so much a religion as a series of fast-moving personality cults.” ― Frank Schaeffer
Thinking about this, I could not get the image of an old Star Trek episode out of my mind.  It’s called Who Mourns for Adonais and it’s about the Enterprise crew coming face to face with Apollo, one of the gods from earth’s ancient culture.

Remember this one?

As the episode goes, back when the gods (turns out they were actually aliens) came to earth, the primitive people saw their power and naturally fell down to worship them.  Under their authority, people felt cared for--and the gods were happy to have the attention.  It was a comfortable, but immature and ultimately dysfunctional relationship.  The gods’ part was to provide care and discipline to the people; the people’s part was to listen, honor, and follow…

…just like in the Cult of the Pastor-god.

In those days, to defy the gods was a fearful thing—as Captain Kirk discovered when he dared to defy Apollo’s authority:
Kirk: “Apollo, we’re willing to talk, but you’ll find we don’t bow to every creature who happens to have a bag of tricks.”

Apollo: “Agamemnon was one such as you, and Hercules--pride and arrogance.  They defied me, until they felt my wrath.”
Have you ever been called “proud” or “arrogant” by a pastor-god when you questioned their authority? If you have, you have come face-to-face with the Cult of the Pastor-god.

Apollo expected these people to fall down and honor him just like people did in the ancient days.  But Kirk, recognizing the dysfunction of such an authoritarian relationship, continued to defy—and the conflict escalates:
Apollo: “I could sweep you out of existence with a wave of my hand, and bring you back again. I can give life or death. What else does mankind demand of its gods?”

Kirk: “Mankind has no need for gods. We find the one quite adequate.”
Apollo: “We shall not debate, mortal.  I offer you eternal rest and happiness according to the ancient ways. I ask little in return. But what I ask for I insist upon.”
The one thing he cannot handle outright defiance; he can only insist on its authority, and promise judgment upon the one who dares defy them.  If you do decide you need to escape the cult, understand one thing:

There is no gentle way to get out of the cult of the Pastor-god.

If you are struggling to get free from a pastor-god cult, please re-read that last sentence a couple more times. This will be a battle of wills.

Eventually, Kirk and his crew had use force to disable Apollo’s source of power.  Apollo was reduced to his true, powerless nature.

In the end, Apollo lost everything and is reduced to tears:
Apollo: “I would have cherished you, cared for you. I would have loved you like a father loves his children. Did I ask so much?”

Kirk: “We’ve outgrown you. You asked for something we can no longer give.”
And there’s the thing.  Even people who have been raised life-long in a pastor-god cult are realizing they can no longer give outright honor and obedience to a religious authority figure.  And they shouldn’t.  Our leader is Christ, not the one up front with the loud voice and the big platform.

More and more people in the body of Christ are finding true “body life” outside of the Cult of the Pastor-god--but it hasn’t come without a price.  The emotional turmoil that comes from separating from an old authority figure can be intense, even devastating.

I’ll repeat: There is no gentle way to get out of the cult of the Pastor-god.

I have my war story of leaving the Cult of the Pastor-god, and I know many of you do too.  If you want to share your story in the comments, please feel free.

  1. oh umm well I know this is a serious topic, but I did giggle quite a bit, because you are so right! and yet at the same time.. I don't deny the function of a true pastor, but the pastor's role is not as big as churches make them out to be. And when we put that much pressure on the pastor to be our mini-jesus then we fail to see the beauty of the rest of the body and many times people fall more in love with the pastor that they do with Jesus. There are people in my life that *I* view as a pastor to me...but just because a denomination appointed a pastor over a church, doesn't make him *my* pastor.

  2. Right. None of this is a criticism toward pastors who do contribute in a wonderful way to the life of the body. Unfortunately the true pastors and the pastor-gods use the same name.

  3. THAT IS IT!!!!
I am reporting you to your PASTOR!!! Boy, is HE going to discipline YOU!!!!
By the way, I agree, there ARE Pastors out there that see this and believe in it and want to take back the church for what Jesus seemed to want it to be! I know a couple of them personally!

I can't even bring myself to talk about my personal experience with this. I am still battling the pain and the fear of rejection and the doubt that standing up for these beliefs DO bring!
"There is no gentle way to get out of the cult of the Pastor-god."
Is VERY true and was true for me.

Here is what I also see however, you find "pastor-god" in ANY "leadership" relationship in the church. It could be the WIFE of the pastor, worship pastor, Elder, Sunday School Teacher or even "Discipler" that want to play that role! And as long as they're close to the "Executive CEO Pastor" they have the power to axe you when needed and put you in your place. (but only when it's REALLY warranted... sarcasm alert.)
Thank you for addressing this topic. I think that a person with a "true" Pastor's heart WOULD!

  4. ...it's interesting that no one recognizes where the mechanical dysfunction is sourced...who laid the infrastructure that the pastor-god sits on top of?...

    ReplyDelete
  5. The infrastructure has been identified in detail in the book Pagan Christianity by Frank Viola. It has it's roots in the greco-roman tradition.

  6. MANY PASTORS ARE WORSHIPPED, AS ARE THEIR LOFTY "POWERFUL" DENOMINATIONS. HA. I THINK GOD IS TIRED OF THEM. I KNOW I AM. THEY BORE ME, AND ANNOY ME. SO I AVOID THEM. AND PITY THEM.

  7. Excellent blog but I think you should have touched on the fear believers in the pastor-god cult have when they encounter believers who have LEFT the cult of the pastor-god - the default position that such people have been hurt by church or leaders and that is why they have left, that THEY are the ones with the problem not the system cannot be underestimated !!!

Of course we all know that this belief protects them from questioning anything they themselves do not like about the pastor-god cult but it is an annoying trump card that they throw into a conversation, bless them .... LOL

  8. I've always been biased against the public who elevate and worship these codependent pastors. I mean just cause a guy walks around calling himself a pastor doesn't mean the words "DAD" are written on his head. I go back the minions who give the mean-girls in high school their crowns. But that's just me... No dumb sheep, no dumb shephards...

  9. Good blog, just discovered it and looking forward to more posts. It seems that the pastor-god correlates to the rise of non-denominational Charismatic churches. Pentecostals look to their pastor in the way that Catholics look to the Pope. Many Charismatic preachers also claim to possess the entire five-fold ministry which is in contrary to Scriptural teaching on the body of Christ and need for each member. It places themselves at the center of ministry while everyone else is their helpers.

It is a sick organizational structure around what I believe is a genuine movement.

  10. That is the most awesome article I have ever read on the function of churches in America. This goes in all denominations and is right on the money. Also check out the "Battered Sheep" website for a bunch of articles like this but this is right down my alley. Could not have been written any better. Little Demi-gods who want to be worshipped like Napoleon's with Little Man's Disease.

  11. Fuck, is this ever true. Had members of the church threaten me with "telling the pastor." What a joke. He's just a man. I don't consider myself atheist, but I'm not exactly on the other side either.

    Cheers.

  12. The only two reasons a Pastor becomes a God like image figure is 1. caused by those who FOLLOWING them and put them on that pedestal (Pastor says this, Pastor says that, Pastor should be honored above others, etc.).

    2. The Pastor's themselves do nothing and say nothing to make sure they are not put on that Godlike figure high pedestal. Many even teach how much they are above others, should be honored above, and so on.

Just by you taking up a seat in a church you are already saying to these types that you support them. Never saying anything about this, and never speaking out against this one person worship like attitudes pervailing continues this cancer.

    3. This is the most importaant thing.ONLY ..."Jesus Christ will have the preeminence in all things" (Colossians 1:12-19).
He is the head "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence."

The reason this even exists at all is because of a lack of knowledge of God's word. We are all told to STUDY for ouselves :"Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15
We are not told to only get our biblical understanding from one person but rather from the Holy Spirit who wrote the Bible. Jesus said "He will send the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit will lead us, and guide us into all truth?" John 16:13

Spending time renewing our mind on God's word feeding our spiritual self is where we need to be having quiet time (away from all the worlds noise) having relationship with the living God. Strengthening your inner person. Our bodies get dirty every day, so does our mind get dirty with wrong thinking and imaginations daily, and we need to wash both daily.

The mind is washed by Gods word Eph 5:26 "the washing of the water of the word" renews, cleans, and restores our minds.

God says in Psalm 138 verse 2 that he "magnifys His word even above His own name."
Jesus said "his wore will never pass away".
God's word is alive and sharper than any two edge sword.

We need to study and get the word for ourselves and then always check every word with the bible that any self appointed preachers and pastors. We need to ask the great the teacher, the Holy Spirit for understanding of His word.
God's word has it's own supernatural DNA that creates a renewed mind, and a great harvest.
The Bible states "I Peter 1:23

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
God's word is not liable to corruption or decay, it's imperishable...and it's eternal and full of power.
Jesus states it's a supernatural SEED and when planted will create a multiplied harvest of blessing. Mark 4 In Mark chapter 4 Jesus states how the kingdom works. He states it works by planting the seed of the supernatural word of God, and it will create a multiplied harvest, AS LONG AS we remove the hindrances to and of growth.

It's time to quit supporting the bad stewardship of Gods money people, the Rolex wearing, multi-milliondollar home living, airplane owning, hundred thousand dollar luxury car driving, status symbol pastors and preachers. Stop supporting, stop giving money to these evil abusers.

  13. Dead on. Excellent article! True. Relevant. Valuable. Worth sharing.

  14. I just found your site and enjoyed this article. I'm no theologian, but I believe this article is what Jesus was referring to when he said, "..the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate." Its the clergy/laity separation that has ruled the church for so long. I'm glad there are those like yourself who have not only left the system, but have take up to write about it.

Although I have been out of the system for several years now, I still don't have the answer. I know of several Christians around the world who are doing their best to live church life a better way. Finding Organic Church is a good book help steer people in a different direction.

Unfortunately, we live in a generation where some of us have woken up to the problems, moral corruption and worldliness prevalent in the church, but we are the minority. I pray God will help us find each other and to speak the truth. Thanks again for the article. -Jade

  15. I agree with your premise that the corporate church isn't what God had in mind. From paid pastors to lording over the flock. But I believe you would be more effective and persuasive if you took a more loving tone with your message - starting with your blog title. Makes me wonder what your motivation is and what drives you? To me, you come across as angry and bitter. I felt the same way when I finally "got it." Also makes me wonder if you still believe? Read a few of my posts. http://honorgodsword.com/

  16. After 25 years in such a church, I told my Pastor I could not and would not remain in a church in which the Pastor taught himself into a position beyond correction. The result was nothing short of shocking:

    1) the Miriam sermon
    2) railing against gossip and criticism
    3) threats that if meetings are not attended, you are breaking faith with God
    4) threats of judgement and exposure to satan if you leave.
    5) smear campaign
    6) shunning by the 'inner circle' once I left
    7) lies from the Pastor about why I left.

3 years ago, I would not have believed my Pastor could behave like this. All I did was grow up!

  17. Interesting article you wrote, but it is actually worse than you have portrayed. Their is no local congregation or church body that is ordained by God, and hasn't been since since mankind started their own religious authorities since the falling away of the seven churches of Revelation sometime in the latter 1st century or just after. We are told in the book of Galatia written approximately 40-50 AD already had another Gospel (Ga 1:6) Think about that? Many of these false believers probably followed Christ himself as he preached. "I marvel myself." Where are the Churches of Revelations today? Dead! God gives us a perfect example of the church age today in the Old Testament. How Faithful was the Nation of Israel to God? They were never faithful!! "According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. Sam 8:8. They were asking for their own KING-god like you say a pastor-god. Again all churches and congregations are false which would mean the pastor and deacons and those with authority are not called of God are false. They are wolves in sheep clothing wither they are aware of it or not. All you need is the Bible to fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Stay clear of Them! Church history is repeating it self or as God says "Nothing is new under the sun"

which means their are no pastors

  18. Ahhh... when it comes right down to it, in any group or gathering, there still has to be a final word folks. If a bus is driving down the road, and everyone begins to grab the steering wheel from the driver, the bus will go off the road. BUT if the driver has proven himself trust worthy (there's the condition) than the passengers can trust that he's taking them where they need to go.

Being a Lead Pastor for 7 years now, I can honestly say my folks do not see me as some god-pastor. But as mentioned in an earlier post, I take great care to be as personally transparent as wisdom allows me to in the way I lead. Now...it is also incredibly dangerous however, when we swing the pendulum too far to the other side of the equation, and have absolutely no source of authority and accountability in a local Church.

There is a Church in a community near us that they do not believe in having an Elder | Pastor | Leader or anyone who "watches over their souls as one who gives account." (Hebrews 13:17) And quite honestly they have had nothing but dealing with problems, issues, and hurts since their inception. And isn't it interesting that many of them (cause I know them) had a past history of escaping from a controlling Church. Well doing their own thing is not working out so well either it turns out.

I get the point of the blog, we just helped a family literally escape a manipulative, sadistic, controlling Pastor just recently (And by the way, they didn't escape to our Church) No but they did end up in a great assembly where the Pastor leads people in becoming more like Christ, and getting into the Word for themselves.

So what I'm saying in all this, is that we need be careful that we DO NOT label every Pastor as striving for power over the sheep. It's just not true. But many think it.

  20. Now this so-called pastor wanted all to follow him without question. We didn't. In return we were demonized and maligned. This pastor impregnated a woman who was not his wife. He delivered plagiarized sermons and demanded that people bless him with material goods. He has been booted out of the church and he is currently pastoring another church.

  21. Some people need to "identify" with some "greater power" to substantiate their earthly existence; be it a belief in god, Allah, Buddha, etc, it fills a void to make life more "meaningful." But for the rapidly growing population of agnostics and atheists we know that science is the master key that unlocks life's "mysteries" proving time after time that we are merely complicated, organic, evolutionary beings created by chance, with a universe that was born by chance.

One of the most brilliant, cutting edge, evolutionary biologists alive today is Sir Dr. Richard Dawkins. Dr. Dawkins has proven that, without a shadow of doubt, that there is absolutely, positively, no god. There was never a god except in the minds of disillusioned folks who were brainwashed into believing such tripe. Other avenues of religious belief are amongst the mentally ill and those who're poorly educated and are deprived of scientific knowledge.

I was raised a catholic and I hastily abandoned the church when I became of adult age and entered college. I suffered tremendous psychological abuse in catholic grade school by the sick, twisted, psychotic nuns and bellicose lay teachers. I hated attending mass as a child, and as a young teen I was throughly appalled by the entire concept of a god, saints, miracles and the rubbish regarding eternal life. I put up a fight with my parents as they insisted I go to a catholic high school. I stood my ground and went to a great public high school. But to pacify my parents I still attended church to "keep peace" in the household.

When I was finally able to be on my own that is when I, for the first time of my life, was a whole person. I'm almost 50 years old now and I haven't ever looked back. I have absolutely no regrets about being an atheist. I know that my atheistic beliefs are rational, scientific and 100% valid.

I'm not at all afraid of death, as death is just part of the living process. The legendary theoretical physicist, Sir Dr. Steven Hawking, who was quoted in a London newspaper, said that, "There is no afterlife. The afterlife is for people who are afraid of the dark."

Death is merely a permanent state of unconsciousness. You go to sleep and never wake up again. That's a rather placid thought I must say!

  22. Keep your eyes on Jesus the true perfect one.
Keep your eyes off man because they go to the bathroom just
like you do. Never and I mean never worship man.
If you your confused read your bible its' your road map unfortuntely
some pastor lead astray and read what is best in interest for THEM>
So saying that if it sounds wrongs it probably is..

  23. What do you expect from American culture? The patriot-saviour-wiseman-rebel-warlord president to be followed into "war". The mythos of America the Free led by a noble patriot. This subservience to a single leader in the name of democracy, an oxymoron, is part of the essence of being American. The church is and shall always be bent and moulded by the local culture regardless of all the denying by Christians that we are "separate" from the world. Maybe a good analysis of ones culture should be the beginning. But sadly many Americans will not accept the truth about their culture and will immediately drop into "patriot-mode" at the first instance that maybe America isn't what they believe it to be.

  24. You see! I always said the church can learn a lot from watching Star Trek! (In fact I preached about it once!)

But seriously, I experienced spiritual abuse at the hands of people who believed this stuff. I've come to realise the whole system is pretty broken and can be utterly toxic - that's why I no longer attend the institution. I still love God... and Star Trek! :)

  25. I love how you pulled in the dialog in Star Trek. So fitting! Excellent post and very insightful.
